The Reflection Table
The Reflection Table is a large sculptural conference table designed to evoke a dreamlike state of consciousness and encourage intuitive and creative thinking. Flowing organic forms merge with the architecture, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, natural and man made. The sculptural base appears to emerge from the floor like a fruiting body rising from mycelium, offering a glimpse into an unseen subterranean world. Frosted glass set into leaf shaped forms on the tabletop hints at the volume within the base, while light passing through the glass creates a sense of movement, like forms carried by a river. Crafted from reclaimed urban walnut harvested and milled onsite, the table was built through a meditative process of stack laminating layer upon layer, with spaces allowing light to pass through the hollow forms. The placement of each piece echoes the growth of cells interlocking to form a larger organism. Created for a life science research environment, the Reflection Table brings the rhythms of the natural world into a space dedicated to discovery, fostering reflection, connection, and creative thinking through biophilic design.
The Tree House Stairway
The Tree House Stairway brings biophilic design into the heart of a home, reflecting the homeowner’s love of art, nature, and individual style. Designed as a focal point within the home, the stairway incorporates a 150 year old burr oak branch that rises 35 feet through two flights of stairs, with flowing forms that echo the growth and movement of a living tree. Eccentrically shaped cherry wood treads and multi height steel balustrades create a sense of movement, while an integrated bench adds another layer of function. The project was a collaboration between the homeowner, architects, builders, contractors, and artists, with Aaron Laux Design serving as designer and project manager. Whole Trees supplied and installed the repurposed tree, lowering it through the roof by crane and carefully positioning it before construction of the stairway could begin. Each piece of wood and metal was hand fabricated and installed, creating a one of a kind architectural feature that brings the presence and spirit of nature into the home.
The Wellness Artwork
The Wellness artwork was commissioned for Monroe Hospital in Monroe, Wisconsin, as a sculptural wayfinding feature within the hospital. Flowing organic forms suggest the movement of water and the rhythms of the natural world, bringing warmth, color, and a sense of calm into the healthcare environment. Carved, maple and cherry wood, rice paper, gold leaf, and integrated LED lighting create depth and a gentle luminosity. Designed to be both a functional landmark and a work of art, the piece helps orient visitors while creating a moment of visual respite. Its flowing forms and illuminated center invite the eye to move through the composition, offering a quiet connection to nature within a place devoted to healing and wellness.
