The idea for this artwork came to me after watching a pair of sandhill cranes grazing together near a lake early in the morning. With the light of the early sun It was the first time I really noticed the quality of their feathers up close. Not just gray, but layered with rust, ash, and pale gold depending on how the light hit them. That observation guided how I created this piece.

The two forms move as a pair rather than a single figure, echoing the way cranes themselves move in tandem. This piece is meant as an homage to the local ecology of central Wisconsin, home to some of the most significant sandhill crane populations in the country, and to the migratory birds who pass through here every spring and fall, marking the seasons the way they have for millennia.

Maple, cherry, and weathered wood, alabaster, birchbark, aluminum, paint, glass. 41 x 144 x 3.5 in.

Made to order — up to 3 months.

This piece is an original, hand-carved work based on a design I've created before — while the composition is consistent, each piece is individually made and may vary slightly in color, grain, and detail.

Handmade at the studio

Thrown by hand, finished by fire

Every piece is wheel-thrown from stoneware and glazed by hand in our studio. This one wears our signature finish, so slight variation in tone and texture is part of it, never a flaw. No two are exactly alike.
