Looking into the Deep

Looking into the Deep suggests the way light might refract as it passes through water or mist, creating an image that shifts between clarity and uncertainty. The layered forms and changing patterns invite the eye to search for something recognizable, even as the image remains open to interpretation.
Constructed as a contemporary interpretation of mosaic, the work is made from weathered pieces of wood, each carrying traces of its own exposure to wind, sun, frost, and time. These marks become part of the larger composition, creating patterns that are both physical and perceived.
Pattern recognition is one of the ways we make sense of the world around us. Our minds instinctively search for relationships, images, and meaning within what we see. This ability can lead to creative insight and discovery, but it can also cause us to find patterns where none exist.
Looking into the Deep explores the tension between what is actually present and what our minds allow us to see. The deeper we look, the more uncertain the boundary between observation and interpretation becomes.
Cherry, Oak, Boxelder and Elm woods. 25.5 x 49.5 x 3.5 in.
Made to order, please allow 6–8 weeks. This piece is an original, hand-carved work based on a design I've created before. While the composition is consistent, each piece is individually made and may vary slightly in color, grain, and detail.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or feather duster. Avoid direct sunlight and high-humidity environments, which can cause wood to expand, contract, or fade over time. If you have questions about caring for your specific piece, feel free to reach out.
Most pieces are made to order, with a lead time of 6-8 weeks (up to 3 months for larger or more complex work). If you need a piece by a specific date, please get in touch before ordering so we can confirm timing.

Care and the handmade promise
Dishwasher and microwave safe. For pieces you love, a gentle hand wash keeps the glaze looking its best over the years. Avoid sudden temperature changes, like moving straight from freezer to oven.
Yes. Every glaze we use is food safe and lead free, fired to a durable stoneware finish that is safe for daily eating and drinking.
Because each piece is thrown and glazed by hand, small differences in size, tone, and surface are natural. The variation is the signature of something made by a person, not a machine.
Each order is wrapped by hand and packed to travel safely. Made-to-order pieces ship within two to three weeks. You will get tracking as soon as it leaves the studio.
If something arrives damaged, send us a photo within seven days and we will make it right with a replacement or refund. Unused pieces can be returned within 30 days.
